Pima County School Retirees’ Association exists primarily to maintain or improve the retirement benefits of school employees in cooperation with other local units of All Arizona School Retirees’ Association. In addition, we support worthwhile educational movements to benefit public schools.
Pima County School Retirees’ Association was the first group in the state of Arizona to work for improvement of teacher retirement — beginning in 1950 when Arizona teacher retirement was $50 per month. One teacher was living in a chicken coop because that was all she could afford. Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus became aware of the terrible state of affairs and remained in Arizona long enough to launch this organization which, at the time, was titled Arizona Retired Teachers’ Association (ARTA) and later Southern Arizona Retired Teachers’ Association.
Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus was also the founder of AARP. Consequently we are linked to the National Retired Teachers of America (NRTA), the education arm of AARP.
